FAQ
Common Orthodontic Issues & Emergencies
What if a Brackets Become Loose
The seal created by the cement/composite has broken. Call our office to schedule an appointment. If the band or bracket detaches from the wire, save it and bring it with you. Often times this is not urgent and can be scheduled accordingly with office hours.
A Wire is Sticking Out and Poking My Mouth
Try tucking it in with the eraser part of a pencil. If that doesn’t work, dry it with a napkin or Q-tip and place wax over the tip of the wire to prevent further irritation. Wax can also be applied on a bracket or hook that is causing discomfort. You may also try cutting it with sanitized cuticle trimmers. Please call our office to schedule a time to have the wire adjusted. For Emergencies after hours, Dr. Gonzalez’ contact info is on our voicemail and it is optimal to reach her via text.
My Clear Aligner is Rough, Isn't Fitting or Lost
Smooth edges with an emery board if needed. If your current clear aligners are fitting but the next one in your sequence is not fitting well, continue to wear your current aligner and call our office to schedule an appointment. Further, if you've lost your current aligner, please wear your Saved previous aligner and call our office. Not wearing any aligners will allow teeth to shift and slow treatment.
Why Are My Brackets Placed Higher Up Towards My Gums
You must be in the PITTS Bracket system. Brackets are placed high near the gums to protect and enhance the natural curve of your smile, a technique called Smile Arc Protection. In comparison to traditional braces that sit in the center of your tooth, the PITTS System assists in widening your dental arch to create a fuller smile. Dr. Gonzalez evaluates your case and will discuss these options during your initial treatment plan.
My Retainer Broke ! What Should I Do
Please save it, even if it’s in pieces! In some cases, our Lab can repair it rather than making a full new one. Call our office right away for an appointment. Even if we haven’t seen you in a long time. We continue to treat our patients well beyond completion of orthodontic treatment. Night time retainer wear retains your beautiful smile.
If You’re Experiencing an Orthodontic Emergency After Hours
Please call our office for Dr. Gonzalez’ emergency contact, text works well, to coordinate a mutual time to alleviate any discomfort. Depending on the type of treatment you’re in she may recommend a follow-up appointment during the week for a full repair.
If you’ve experienced trauma to the mouth, call your dentist and in some cases a visit to the emergency room is necessary and follow up with our office right away.
If you are unsure, please feel free to email photos of the area and Dr. Gonzalez will respond as soon as possible.
